FIA to identify and suspend officials involved in excessive billing of electricity consumers

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced strict action against officials responsible for overcharging electricity bills to consumers.

At a meeting in Islamabad on Saturday attended by Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Leghari, Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar and other relevant officials, the prime minister directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to identify and suspend the officials concerned.

He stressed that these actions would not be tolerated and described the perpetrators as “enemies of the people”.

In the same meeting, the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) announced that the circular debt in the power sector had increased to Rs 2,655 billion by May 2024.

The committee, chaired by Prime Minister Sharif, approved the setting up of a support unit with the aim of improving the efficiency of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), curbing power theft and ensuring timely collection of bills.

This support unit, which will operate for two years after the approval of the Federal Cabinet, will start functioning under Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO).

The government’s initiatives aim to address systemic problems in the energy sector, thereby reducing financial pressure and improving service delivery.
