Updated: Shooting in downtown Birmingham leaves one dead

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A July 4 shooting in broad daylight at a downtown Birmingham intersection left one man dead and the roadway littered with dozens of bullet casings.

The victim was identified as 45-year-old Dietrich Boone.

According to Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald, officers responded to a 911 call about a firearm being used at the intersection of 25th Street North and 7th Avenue North at 2:20 p.m. Thursday.

When officers arrived, they found a gray Chrysler 300 that had crashed into a utility pole. They found an adult male in a field with a gunshot wound. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“We believe there was a shooting near the intersection of 25th Street North and 7th Avenue North,” Fitzgerald said. “At this time, it appears the victim was the target.”

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that several people were involved in a shooting and the victim was hit by gunfire.

There is currently no one in custody.
