A woman was attacked by a wolf while jogging and suffered wounds to her neck, legs and back

JAKARTA – A woman staying at a French safari zoo suffered serious injuries to her neck, calf and back from a wolf bite after entering an area normally accessible only by car.

The 37-year-old, who was staying overnight in the park, had gone jogging in the morning and accidentally entered the safari zone, a seven-hectare area where animals, wolves and bears roam freely, as CNN reported on TF1 on June 28.

The attack occurred at around 9:30 a.m. in the Thoiry Zoological Park in Yvelines, about 50 kilometers west of Paris, France. TF1 reported that the team “slapped” him as he ran and inflicted serious injuries by biting him on the neck, calf and back.

“Fortunately, the medical staff intervened immediately and we were able to save this person,” zoo director Christelle Bercheny said at a press conference.

LeParisien, meanwhile, said the attack was carried out by three wolves. According to Bergeny, the victim entered through the entrance to the “natural American fence” where the Macthenic wolf lived, which was recognizable by its gray fur, as well as wild dogs, bears and even bison. The access to the ground-based platform prevents animals from crossing it. But not humans.

Nevertheless, according to the safari managers, customers are “fully informed” about the dangers in this area.

“They have plans, there are intermediaries who inform them and they continue to be given reminders,” he explained.

The woman is being treated at a nearby hospital and is now in a “stable” condition. The zoo has launched an investigation, while three Macnetic wolves remain in the safari area.

According to DW, the Thoiry Zoo, founded in 1968 by a local castle owner, was sold to a group of investors in 2018. Covering an area of 150 hectares, the zoo is home to around 1,500 animals and around 100 species.
