Bolivia’s army chief was arrested on Wednesday after sending soldiers and tanks to government buildings in what President Luis Arce called an attempted coup. Troops entered Plaza Murillo, sparking global criticism. A tank tried to break down the door of the presidential palace. Surrounded by soldiers and tanks, sacked army chief Gen. Juan José Zuniga claimed the armed forces aimed to restructure democracy. Zuniga was later captured and arrested as he spoke to reporters. Arce reiterated from a balcony to hundreds of supporters: “Nobody can take away the democracy we have won.” Al Jazeera’s Alessandro Rampietti reports from the Colombian capital, where politicians have condemned the uprising.
