Two people charged in hit-and-run crash in Florence that killed 30-year-old cyclist

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Two men are facing charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash in Florence earlier this month.

Meredith Cannon, 45, is charged with hit and run resulting in death, driving while license suspended and failure to give information and render aid. Kenneth Burks is charged with driving while licensed for an unauthorized person and aiding and abetting murder.

According to Florence police, Cannon was traveling on Howe Springs Road on the night of June 6 when he struck and killed a bicyclist and left the scene of the accident.

The car belonged to Burks, who was sitting in the passenger seat during the accident, police said.

Officers arrested Cannon and Burks Thursday morning. Before his arrest, police announced they were looking for Cannon as a person of interest in the case.

Both Cannon and Burks are incarcerated at the Florence County Detention Center.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the man who died in the crash as 30-year-old Jonathan Mendez of Florence.
