15 years later: International organization calls for investigation into Shopian double rape and murder

Even though 15 years have passed, the families of the victims of the double rape and murder in Shopian have yet to receive justice.

According to a Kashmir Media Service report released today on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Shopian rape and double murder, the victims Aasiya and Neelofar were abducted, raped and then killed by the uniformed men in Shopian. Their bodies were found in a nullah on the night of May 29-30, 2009.

The shocking incident in which the victims were abducted, raped and then killed by uniformed men in Shopian is a grim reminder of the brutality of Indian troops in illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

This tragic event is a testament to the institutionalised and structured violence that India maintains in the region. The report highlights that women in Kashmir are being oppressed through harassment, torture and rape to suppress the legitimate demand for a plebiscite. Shockingly, it reveals that 11,263 cases of rape, gang rape, humiliation and harassment by Indian troops, paramilitary forces and police have been reported in IIOJK since 1990.—KMS
