According to the CID, the attack was carried out on the orders of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who had threatened Salman in the past. The gangster is currently lodged in Sabarmati Jail. Bishnoi has claimed that he was targeting the actor for shooting a deer goat while shooting Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1998. However, police say that Bishnoi is trying to gain popularity by threatening a film star.

Earlier this month, Navi Mumbai police arrested five people with links to Bishnoi who had planned to attack the actor at his farm in Panvel.
