Man opened fire on police before police fatally shot him in Harrisburg

YES, LORI. THIS SHOOTING HAPPENED ON SUNDAY AT 1:30 AM HERE IN DOWNTOWN HARRISBURG, JUST DOWN THE STREET AND AROUND THE CORNER FROM WHERE I AM STANDING. THE DAUPHIN COUNTY MORTUARY IDENTIFIES 22-YEAR-OLD KENDRELL HALL AS THE PERSON SHOT BY POLICE EARLIER TODAY. WE ACTUALLY SAW INVESTIGATORS IN DOWNTOWN HARRISBURG THIS MORNING, LOOKING AT WHAT MIGHT HAVE ACTUALLY HAPPENED BEFORE THE CONFRONTATION, IF THERE WAS ANY EVIDENCE THAT COULD HELP THEM GET A BETTER IMAGE OF WHAT HAPPENED. POLICE SAY THEY WERE FIRST CALLED TO THE AREA BECAUSE OF THE SHOTS THEY HEARD. DAUPHIN COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY FRAN CHARDO SAYS COPPER OFFICERS SAW HALL FLYING FROM THE AREA. CHARDO SAYS HE WAS MASKED. THE PROSECUTOR SAYS THE MAN FIRED A GUN OVER HIS SHOULDER AT COPS AS HE TRYING TO EVIDENCE THEM. POLICE SAY HALL EVENTUALLY TURNED TOWARDS THE COPS AND AT ONE POINT OPENED FIRE AT A CAPITOL IN HARRISBURG. BOTH COPS WERE IN THE AREA. CHARDO SAYS THE SHOTS WERE FIRED AT THOSE COPS BEFORE THEY RETURNED FIRE AND FATALLY INJURED HIM. HALL POLICE SAYS A K-9 UNIT WAS ALSO SERIOUSLY INJURED BY GUNSHOT IN THAT INCIDENT. CHARDO SAYS A HANDGUN WAS FOUND IN HALL AFTER THE SHOOTING, AND CHARDO SAYS HALL SHOULD NOT HAVE A FIREARM BECAUSE OF A PREVIOUS CRIMINAL HISTORY. DA: Masked man opened fire on police before police fatally shot him in Harrisburg

The Dauphin County District Attorney says police shot and killed a man who opened fire on officers in Harrisburg. The medical examiner’s office identified the man as 22-year-old Kendrell Hall of Harrisburg. A Harrisburg police officer and a Capitol Police dog with a canine heard gunshots early Sunday morning. When they arrived, they saw a masked man flee the area and, as officers pursued him, began firing at him over his shoulder with a gun. As officers pursued him, he turned and shot them in the 200 block of South Street, according to District Attorney Fran Chardo. Officers returned fire, killing him. Chardo said a handgun was recovered from the man. The police dog was struck by one of the bullets and seriously injured. Chardo said his office’s investigation into the incident is in its early stages and believes the officers’ use of force was justified. Everything from body camera footage to police interviews is being reviewed.

When they arrived, they saw a masked man fleeing the area. As officers pursued him, they began firing a gun over his shoulder as they ran.

As police pursued him, he turned and fired at them in the 200 block of South Street, according to District Attorney Fran Chardo.

The officers returned fire and killed him.

Chardo said a gun was confiscated from the man.

The police dog was hit by one of the bullets and seriously injured.

Chardo said his office is in its early stages of investigating the incident, and believes the officers’ use of force was justified. Everything from body camera footage to interviews with the officers will be reviewed.
