8 people in 4 states sickened by Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Chocolate Bars

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about a brand of edible chocolate microdosing products that has caused users to experience severe reactions such as seizures, loss of consciousness and vomiting.

Eight people in four states have reported illnesses after consuming Diamond Shruumz brand microdosing chocolate bars, the FDA said Friday. All of the people sought medical attention and six were hospitalized, the agency said.

No deaths have been reported, the agency said.

The microdosing chocolate bars can be purchased online and nationwide at retailers that sell products containing hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) or delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC). The full list of retailers is currently unknown, the FDA said.

The edible products are made from soy, milk and Diamond’s “proprietary blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms,” the company’s website says.

It is unclear why the chocolate bars caused nausea in some people; investigations are ongoing.

In which states do people live who have become ill from consuming microdose edibles?

The FDA says the eight people live in Arizona (four), Indiana (two), Nevada (one) and Pennsylvania (one). The latest case occurred on Monday, June 3.

All eight became ill after eating the food. Symptoms included seizures, central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, drowsiness), agitation, abnormal heart rate, high and low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, according to the FDA.

The FDA recommends that people do not purchase or consume Diamond Shruumz brand microdosing chocolate bars (regardless of flavor) at retail stores or online at this time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other state and local agencies are assisting in the investigation.

Health officials are concerned about children consuming edibles

The FDA warned parents and caregivers that the candy bars could be attractive to children and teens because they look like candy – similar to gummy bears and other cannabis-based edible products.

“Parents and guardians should discuss the information in this warning with their children and take special care to prevent this product from being consumed by younger people,” the agency’s warning said.

What to do if you get sick from food?

If you become ill from eating these chocolate bars – or any other substance – you can contact your doctor or call poison control at 1-800-222-1222. Tell them if you recently consumed Diamond Shruumz brand Microdosing Chocolate Bars, the FDA said.
