Atlanta United striker Giorgos Giakoumakis is set to join Mexican club Cruz Azul in a $10 million move, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic.

Reports indicate that a deal was reached, but the deal has not been finalized.

Giakoumakis, 29, is in his second season in Atlanta, arriving in a $4 million-plus transfer after a two-season stint with Celtic of the Scottish Premiership. He has five goals and two assists in 11 matches (eight starts) for Atlanta United this year after having 17 goals and three assists in 27 matches (21 starts) in 2023.

He came off the bench Sunday in a loss to Charlotte FC and failed to score for a seventh straight appearance. Afterward, he did not speak with the media, according to The Athletic and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Giakoumakis played for several teams in his native Greece, including AEK Athens, before moving through Poland and the Netherlands before joining Celtic.

He made 22 appearances for the Greek national team, scoring four international goals.

Atlanta United (4-8-4, 16 points) is in 13th place in the 15-team Major League Soccer Eastern Conference.

Cruz Azul reached the final of the Liga MX Clausura last month, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Club America. (Reuters)
