23-year-old woman killed in dog attack at County Limerick home | World News

The dog was put down and several others were seized. An Irish minister said she was “horrified” by the incident and was “determined” to push for stricter dog control laws.

A 23-year-old woman has died in a dog attack in a house in southwest Ireland.

Rescue workers were called to the incident in BallynacarrigyCounty Limerick, on Tuesday at around 11.40pm.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Limerick University Hospital for an autopsy.

The dog in question was euthanized and several others were confiscated.

A minister who recently set up a group to investigate dog control said she was “horrified by the news” and was “determined” to tighten the laws.

Minister Heather Humphreys said: “Firstly, I would like to express my deepest condolences to her family for this deeply shocking incident.”

“A Garda investigation is ongoing and it is important that we establish the facts surrounding the incident.

“I have repeatedly said that more measures are needed in the area of ​​dog control.

“That is why I have set up a cross-government pressure group, chaired by retired Assistant Garda Commissioner John Twomey, to look into this whole area.”

She added: “I have asked the group to review the list of restricted breeds in line with the measures taken in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”

“I am committed to working with colleagues across Government to take all necessary action to strengthen our dog control laws.”

There are several restricted breeds in Ireland, including German Shepherds, Rottweilers and various Bull Terriers, as well as some cross breeds.

Restricted dogs must wear a collar with a tag containing their owner’s information, be muzzled in public, and be kept on a short, strong leash. The leash must be kept by a person over 16 years of age who is able to control it.
