Decades has its liquor license revoked due to mass shooting

The Alcoholic Beverages and Cannabis Authority determined that Decades poses an imminent threat to the health and safety of the public.

WASHINGTON — Popular D.C. nightclub Decades has lost its liquor license as a result of a mass shooting in April.

The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCB) determined that Decades poses an imminent threat to the health and safety of the public. In a report issued by the ABCB, the board said security guards failed to properly check people entering the nightclub for weapons. Six people, including five employees, were shot.

On April 26, just before 11:30 p.m., security was alerted to an aggressive man on the third floor of Decades. Security forces reportedly removed the man, identified as Rennwel Mantock, from the club. Security put Mantock on the ground, and at one point he stood up and reportedly produced a gun that he had hidden in his waistband. He is accused of firing between six and ten shots, hitting the host, four security guards and a person waiting outside the club. Five of the six victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mantock ran away but was located and arrested by MPD shortly afterwards. During the investigation, MPD reviewed surveillance footage leading up to the shooting. The footage showed security gently patting down but not scanning all areas where someone might hide a weapon, including the waistband of his pants.

Decades has two metal detection wands to check attendees for weapons, but they were not used the night of the shooting, saying they had not worked for at least two weeks because the battery had not been charged. Allowed Mantock to put his gun in the nightclub.

The board reviewed the nightclub’s security plan and did not include instructions for security, how to properly screen patrons for weapons before entering the nightclub, what to do if they find a weapon, or how to deal with people who do trying to enter the club with a weapon.

It is unknown how long her license will remain suspended.
