Construction worker dies after accident at high school in Portland, Oregon

A steelworker died after being injured in an accident at a high school construction site. Portland, Oregon.

The Oregonian reports that Samantha “Sam” Deschenes was seriously injured in an accident on Thursday. Benson Polytechnic High School and was admitted to the intensive care unit of a local hospital. She died on Saturday.

The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the woman’s death. A spokesman said that “preliminary information indicates this was a forklift accident.”

A spokesman for Portland Public Schools was not immediately available for comment. A representative of the construction company Andersen Construction said on Monday that work on the site had been halted “in the interest of the health and well-being of our team members.”

The Benson modernization began in 2021 and is scheduled to be completed this summer, according to the district’s website. During construction, students attended classes at the Marshall campus in southeast Portland.
