Knife attack in Germany: Police officer succumbs to his injuries | World news

The 29-year-old was one of six people who suffered serious injuries in the attack on Mannheim’s town square on Friday. The police have not publicly commented on a possible motive.

A police officer who was stabbed during an attack on a right-wing extremist rally in Germany has died.

The 29-year-old was one of six people who suffered serious injuries in the accident. Central square of Mannheim on Friday.

He was placed in an induced coma but died Sunday, officials said.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he was “deeply saddened” and said that the officer’s “commitment to the safety of all of us deserves the highest recognition.”

The officer suffered multiple stab wounds to the head and neck area.

A 25-year-old suspect from Afghanistan was shot and injured at the scene.

He remains in hospital and a judge has ordered his detention on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police and prosecutors have not publicly stated a possible motive for the attack.

However, it happened during an event organized by German right-wing extremist group Pax Europa.

Among the injured was 59-year-old anti-Islam activist Michael Sturzenberger, one of the group’s leading figures.

The other victims were four men aged 25, 36, 42 and 54.

The 54-year-old initially suffered life-threatening injuries, but it is now assumed that he will survive.
