South Korea is on alert over balloons dropping garbage from the North

South Korea has warned residents near the border with North Korea to be on alert after media reports said more than 90 balloons containing various objects, apparently including garbage and excrement, were discovered.

The South Korean military said that unknown objects believed to be from North Korea had been spotted near the heavily fortified border. The public was asked to stay away and report the objects to the military or police.

By Wednesday, more than 90 balloons had been discovered, some of which had landed on the ground while others were still in the air, Yonhap News reported, citing a military source.

Photos published in South Korean media showed an inflated white balloon with a plastic bag attached, and another image showed what appeared to be a burst balloon with garbage scattered around it.

North Korea’s deputy defense minister announced in a statement on Sunday that they would “deploy strong troops for self-defense” and warned that they would send “mountains of waste paper and dirt” to the South because it was letting “dirty things” fly to the North.
