Six newborns killed in fire at India Baby Hospital: Police

Six newborns died in a fire at a children’s hospital in the Indian capital as rescue workers rushed into the flames to save the infants, police said on Sunday.

“Legal action will be taken against the owner of the hospital,” Choudhary said.

He did not provide any further details about the children’s deaths.

In addition to the six dead, another of the 12 babies rescued from the suffocating fumes was found dead before the fire broke out, Choudhary said, without elaborating.

The fire broke out late Saturday at the New Born Baby Care hospital in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area.

Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Service, told the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) that 14 fire engines had been deployed to fight the fire.

“The fire spread too quickly due to an explosion in an oxygen cylinder,” he told PTI.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal described the situation as “heartbreaking”.

“We all stand with those who lost their innocent children in this accident,” he said on social media.

“The causes of the incident are being investigated and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”
