Heavy thunderstorms likely tonight through Friday morning

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – A line of severe thunderstorms is expected to move through the region tonight into Friday morning. The main threat is damaging winds, but heavy hail and isolated tornadoes are also possible. Flash flooding could also occur in some areas.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms will develop in western Nebraska tonight and move eastward throughout the night and into early Friday morning. The eastern third to half of Nebraska will likely not see this line of thunderstorms until after midnight tonight. Damaging winds (possibly gusting over 75 mph) are the greatest threat. Large hail (up to the size of a tennis ball) and isolated tornadoes are also possible. The greatest chance for large hail will be in central and western Nebraska. Heavy rain may be present at times, making flooding possible in some areas. A flood warning has been issued for parts of eastern Nebraska tonight through Friday morning. This area has received several inches of rain recently.

There is a 20 percent chance of lingering rain showers and early morning thunderstorms in southeastern Nebraska and northeastern Kansas. Most of Friday should be mostly sunny to sunny, cooler and breezy in Nebraska and northern Kansas. Winds will be northwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Lows will be between 40 and 43 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 6 degrees Celsius), with highs between 43 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (6 to 25 degrees Celsius).

Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy, with a slight chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Isolated to possibly widespread showers and thunderstorms are possible Saturday night into Sunday morning. Isolated to isolated severe thunderstorms are currently possible, with large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes during this time. Another round of showers and thunderstorms could develop late Sunday and last into the early hours of Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday currently look dry, with rain chances returning on Thursday.
