Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings was knocked out by a hit; David Perron’s reaction leads to the suspension

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin lay motionless on the ice and left Saturday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators after being hit in the back of the head by forward Mathieu Joseph during a front-line challenge at the net.

Red Wings teammate David Perron was suspended for six games for his reaction to the hit.

Larkin fell to Ottawa’s Parker Kelly and then ended up face down on the ice after the Joseph goal at 13:50 of the first period. The Red Wings medical staff called for a stretcher, but Larkin stood up and appeared unsteady as teammates helped him to the locker room. He did not return to the game.

The Red Wings announced Monday that Larkin will be placed on the injured list retroactive to Saturday with an upper-body injury. He will be out for at least a week, but coach Derek Lalonde told reporters there is no time frame and the team will know more in the next few days.

The game was concerning because Larkin suffered a neck injury while being checked by Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars in April 2021.

“It was positive that he was able to get up and be helped off the ice instead of on a stretcher,” Lalonde said.

David Perron was banned for checking Artem Zub

Joseph and Kelly were called for brawling in Saturday’s game, but Perron received a harsher penalty when he checked Senators defenseman Artem Zub, who had fallen on Larkin.

Perron received a match penalty, and the NHL’s player safety department gave him six games on the grounds that what he did was not a hockey play, but rather “a deliberate hit with a stick, made with intent.” “to take revenge on an opponent.”

The The NHL Players’ Association has filed an appeal on behalf of Perron.

Detroit’s Christian Fischer fought with Joseph early in the third period in a 5-1 win in Ottawa.

“It was a tough sight,” Fischer told reporters. “You never want to see anyone let down, especially the leader of your team. It was hard to regroup. I think we did a pretty good job.”

Larkin was suspended one game in 2021 for roughly attacking Joseph, who was playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning at the time. He returned the favor for Joseph’s check.
