Summer is just around the corner and while travel plans may vary, one thing remains the same: the need to wear your seatbelt. With that in mind, Evanston Police announced today that they are increasing enforcement efforts through Memorial Day weekend to remind motorists to “Click It or Ticket.”

“Whether you’re driving around the corner or driving across the country, remember to buckle up every time,” said Commander Scott Sophier. “The ‘Click It or Ticket’ initiative is about saving lives. We want the use of seat belts to become second nature for all drivers and passengers.”

The consequences of not wearing the seat belt or not wearing it properly are obvious. In 2022, there were 300 fatalities in Illinois involving unrestrained passengers. Seat belts only save lives if they are used. Unfortunately, some people still don’t like to buckle up.

It is estimated that 91.9% of people wear seatbelts nationwide, while Illinois has a seatbelt use rate of 93%. The simple click of a seat belt can prevent injury or save your life in an accident.

Remember to choose “Click It or Ticket” day or night, on every ride and at any time.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
