A woman has been arrested after a donation box was stolen from a church building.

The collection box for a North East hospice was picked up from Newcastle Civic Center just before 11am BST on Thursday, Northumbria Police said.

Officers used CCTV to locate a suspect and arrested him in the Eldon Gardens area of ​​the city centre.

A 35-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of theft and has since been released on bail.

Ch Supt Barrie Joisce said: “After a report of theft was reported at a city center location, officers at the multi-agency center were able to work closely with colleagues to quickly gather information and set about identifying a suspect.”

The arrest was made by officers from the police’s Newcastle City Safe project, which sees police working with staff from Newcastle City Council and the NE1 Business Improvement District.
