3 family threatened over the death of Kayla Rincon-Miller

Cape Coral police have released details about three people who allegedly threatened to kill witnesses to prevent them from speaking to investigators during the Kayla Rincon-Miller murder investigation.

Rincon-Miller, 15, died after she was shot when a group in an SUV demanded money from her and two others as they left the theater on March 17. Two teenagers were arrested and charged as adults with second-degree murder.

Christopher “Buster” Horne Jr., 16, was arrested April 17 and Thomas Stein, 16, was arrested March 19. They are being held without bail in the Lee County Jail.

In court Thursday for Christopher Horne Jr., Cape Coral police Detective Michael Lasalandra testified that people manipulated, tried to dissuade Stein’s mother, Jessica Stein, from cooperating and threatened one of her others to kill children.

On Thursday and Friday, Christopher D. Horne Sr., Shanice Stewart and Varaka Stewart were arrested on charges of threatening, tampering and coercing a witness in a murder investigation related to the Rincon-Miller investigation, police said.

The victim was not identified in Friday’s post on the department’s Facebook page. It was said the three repeatedly threatened the victim that they would be killed if they did not remain silent.

Cape Coral police said that the day after the killing, a small white sedan carrying Buster Horne arrived at the manipulated victim’s home.

Buster Horne was with a woman who identified herself as Buster’s mother and the man who identified himself as Buster’s father. The couple told the victim that Buster and Thomas Stein were involved in the murder and asked the victim to follow them and bring Stein with them.

Investigators later identified the individuals as Shanice Stewart and Christopher D. Horne, both of Cape Coral.

The victim and Thomas Stein followed them out of fear for their lives and the feeling that they had no choice, investigators said.

When they arrived in the Gator Circle area, the victim and Stein were threatened to keep quiet and not cooperate with law enforcement. Christopher D. Horne was holding a handgun while threatening her, police said.

A woman, later identified as Varaka Stewart, Shanice Steward’s sister, was already at the scene and also threatened the victim.

The victim was repeatedly threatened that he would be killed if he did not comply and remain silent.

On March 19, investigators arrested Stein and the victim reported that the same two women arrived at her home. The women again asked the victim to remain calm and to silence Stein.

They promised the victim money to keep quiet, the release said.

According to the report, between March 25 and April 17, the victim received phone calls in which a woman, believed to be Shanice Stewart, pleaded with the victim to remain silent and not cooperate with law enforcement and gave assurances that Stein had done the same.

The caller threatened and intimidated the victim and suggested that she had people “from inside and outside who could get to her,” the report said. During one call, the caller thanked the victim for protecting her “baby.”

On April 17, police arrested Buster Horne on charges of murdering Kayla Rincon-Miller. That day, the victim received a call from the same previous caller who stated, “They got my son” and that she didn’t play games.
