Huron County remembers fallen heroes

According to a news release from Sheriff Kelly Hanson, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office will observe National Police Week with all uniformed personnel wearing a black ribbon over their badges.

National Police Week takes place from Saturday 11th May to Friday 17th May. The nationwide celebration began in 1962 after President Kennedy designated May 14 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week in which May 14th occurred was designated National Police Week.

In Huron County, Sheriff’s Office personnel will honor the memory of Huron County Sheriff Joseph J. Murray, who died at Lake Huron on June 2, 1932, and Huron County Sheriff’s Deputy Kelly J. Vermeersch, who died on June 11, 2000 in a patrol car accident. Both died in the line of duty.
