13 Traffic Alert: FM-1097 reduced to one lane over Atkins Creek in Montgomery County after heavy rain washed away the road

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — If you frequently drive on FM-1097 east of the city of Montgomery, beware! Tuesday’s heavy rains washed away part of the road over Atkins Creek.

Currently only one lane is open in this area.

Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough shared photos of the damage on social media. Part of the roadway appears to have collapsed into the creek below, causing the guardrail to bend.

Keough said TxDOT is working on a repair and motorists in the area should expect significant delays.

He said he expects an update on the schedule and expectations later Wednesday morning.

The road damage comes as even heavier rains are expected in southeast Texas on Wednesday and Thursday.

The ABC13 weather team has declared Thursday an ABC13 Weather Alert Day. More tropical rains are on the way and the risk of flash flooding appears to be even higher for Thursday as a low pressure system moves through Southeast Texas and will intensify and prolong the heavy rains.
