Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced Tuesday that Jackson Lee will be buried in the chapel from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. After a private arrival, Whitmire, city council members and members of Jackson Lee’s family will hold a brief ceremony.

Legendary heart surgeon and Houston resident Dr. Michael DeBakey was the first person to lie in state at City Hall after his death in 2008.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family, staff and friends of Congresswoman Jackson Lee,” Whitmire said in a statement. “This is a moment of unity in Huston as we honor her life and legacy.”

Whitmire and Jackson Lee faced off in a race for the city’s mayoral seat last year, when Whitmire was elected by voters to lead the state’s most populous city.

“Despite our different styles, we have consistently worked toward the same goals, advocating for the issues that matter most to Houstonians,” he said Tuesday.

Jackson Lee served on the Houston City Council before being elected to represent Texas’ 18th Congressional District for nearly 30 years. She announced her pancreatic cancer diagnosis in June.

“For decades, Congresswoman Jackson Lee has been a dedicated fighter for the people of Houston,” Whitmire said. “I encourage everyone to come to City Hall to honor this true public servant and honor her unwavering commitment to our community.”

Further details about the tribute will be announced soon, according to the city hall.
