Houston Mourns Loss of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee | Texas

Houston, Texas – After a short but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer, Texas Democratic powerhouse and Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has died.

The Houston Police Department mourns the passing of U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. For more than three decades, Congresswoman Jackson Lee dedicated herself to serving the people of Houston, the state of Texas, and the nation. “HPD is forever grateful to the Congresswoman for her commitment to justice and her legacy of helping those in need,” the department said.

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released a statement saying, “Surrounded by her family, Congresswoman Jackson Lee leaves behind an iconic legacy that will stand the test of time. Known for her tireless advocacy, the Congresswoman dedicated her life to public service, advancing civil rights, health care reform, and disaster recovery.”

Texas Democratic Party Treasurer Odus E. Evbagharu also paid tribute to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, saying, “Tonight and forever, we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Her tireless commitment to justice and equality has inspired us all.”

Jackson Lee began her career in Houston, where she served as a municipal judge and city council member from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. She then ran for Congress in Texas’ 18th Congressional District. Her time in Congress was marked by efforts to secure federal funding for critical infrastructure projects, including flood control and transportation improvements. Her work was critical to supporting Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts, ensuring that affected communities received needed assistance and resources.

At the national level, Jackson Lee has championed legislation to promote social justice, protect voting rights, and advance criminal justice reform. “His unwavering advocacy for criminal justice reform, access to health care, and the rights of marginalized communities has transformed countless lives,” Evbagharu said.

In the halls of Congress and beyond, Sheila Jackson Lee’s voice rang out with strength and conviction. “Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, reminding us that true leadership is defined by service and an unwavering dedication to justice,” Hinojosa said.
