Bagel shop, cafe, wine bar and taco restaurant among Atlanta restaurant openings

Emerald City Bagels is now open on the Eastside BeltLine. (Provided by Emerald City Bagels)

Emerald City Bagels
665 Auburn Avenue, Old Fourth Ward

A second location of the popular East Atlanta Village bagel shop opened July 8 as part of a new phase of the Studioplex complex along the Eastside BeltLine. In addition to serving a variety of bagels and New York-style schmear and bagel sandwiches, it will also serve coffee, cold drinks like egg creams, and weekly specials like an inverted grilled cheese bagel sandwich. Once installed, a vending machine will eventually allow people to get off the BeltLine to order, pay for, and receive hot bagel sandwiches without entering the store. Think of a vending machine — invented in Berlin in 1895 and introduced to the United States in 1902 by the Horn and Hardart company — as an automated self-service system similar to a vending machine but with hot food to go.

Mother-daughter duo Deanna and Jackie Halcrow opened Emerald City Bagels on Glenwood Avenue in East Atlanta Village seven years ago. Before opening the shop, the Halcrows operated Emerald City as a pop-up bagel shop at farmers markets. Emerald City also sells bagels by the dozen and offers contactless delivery through its Bagel Fairy service.

The Gordo
546 Main Street, Lindbergh

The owners of Birria El Gordo in Marietta are opening El Gordo in Uptown Atlanta near the Lindbergh MARTA station on Tuesday, July 9. The restaurant serves Mexico City-style street tacos, the family’s famous birria and dishes like tostadas. Expect tequila-based cocktails at the bar, a large patio overlooking Main Street and live music from mariachi bands and DJs.

El Gordo joins J’ouvert Caribbean Kitchen, 26 Thai Kitchen and restaurant incubator Uptown Test Kitchen in the complex. Bene Korean Steakhouse, White Windmill Bakery and Madre Selva are expected to open by the end of the year.

Bartique Coffee
2315 Cascade Road, Cascade Heights

Cafe Bartique, a coffee shop and wine bar, opened earlier this month in Cascade Heights. Taking over the former BUZZ Coffee and Winehouse space on Cascade Road, Cafe Bartique serves coffee and coffee drinks, juices and wine along with pastries, baked goods, croissant sandwiches and light snacks throughout the day. A grand opening will take place on Monday, July 15. Until then, Cafe Bartique will serve a limited food and beverage menu.

Café Bartique joins a handful of new Black-owned restaurants in the neighborhood, including chef Deborah VanTrece’s Orethea’s at the Point, Barrio ATL and Aiskrimu Ice Cream Bar.
