According to Baltimore Police’s semi-annual report, murders and gun violence have declined

BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Police Department has released its semiannual crime report, detailing that the department has seen a double-digit decline in gun violence.

This includes a 36% decrease in homicides and a 30% decrease in non-fatal shootings.

During this period, the crime clearance rate for homicides improved to 70.1%, an increase of 24% over the same period last year.

“I want to thank the hard-working men and women of the Baltimore Police Department. Their continued dedication to our city and partnership with the communities we serve have contributed to the reduction in violent crime, as has our ongoing commitment to regaining the public’s trust,” said Commissioner Richard Worley.

Here are some key highlights from the report:

  • The number of arrests increased by 13%, including a 72% increase in arrests for drug offenses.
  • The number of juvenile victims of homicide and non-fatal shootings has fallen by 41%.
  • The department seized 1,125 firearms and 169 counterfeit firearms, an average of seven firearms seized per day.
  • BPD proactive enforcement increased by 66%, including increases in pedestrian and bicycle patrols by 211% and 68%, respectively.

Through July 8, 2024, the number of homicides in the current year has decreased by 33.8% (96 versus 145) and the number of nonfatal shootings has decreased by 36.5% (217 versus 342).
