Hampton man dies when MMMBT SUV falls into water

The person killed in Monday’s accident on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel was identified as a 55-year-old man from Hampton.

Virginia State Police received a report of a two-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 664 near the MMMBT at approximately 6:58 a.m. that resulted in one vehicle entering the water.

Investigators said a 2011 Chevy Traverse was traveling in the right lane of I-664 South when it attempted to change lanes and collided with a 2005 Dodge Durango traveling in the left lane, causing the Traverse to spin out and fly over the bridge wall, according to state police.

The Traverse was recovered from the water at around 2:32 p.m. on Monday. The driver, Daniel Irizarry, who lived in both Hampton and Orlando, was killed in the accident. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

According to the state police, the MMMBT suffered no structural damage.
