A new report shows that motor vehicle deaths in New York have reached their highest level in a decade.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli released a report warning all New York drivers to be extra cautious on the road.

According to the report, traffic fatalities in New York state increased by 25.8 percent from 2019 to 2022. The number of traffic fatalities in New York state in 2022, the latest year on record, was the “highest in a decade,” officials say.

The basis for this statement is the fact that, according to the New York State Audit Office, both the number of vehicle miles driven and the number of licensed drivers and traffic accidents have declined.

“New York City’s traffic fatalities have risen at an alarming rate since the pandemic,” DiNapoli said. “Despite fewer drivers on the road and greatly improved vehicle safety precautions, fatal crashes are increasing. As New Yorkers head out for the Fourth of July and summer vacations, we should drive carefully and arrive safely.”

1,175 traffic fatalities in New York State

In 2022, according to official figures, 1,175 people died in car accidents, the highest number since 2013.

“Traffic-related deaths increased nearly 17% nationwide, while New York City deaths increased 25.8% between 2019 and 2022. This increase coincides with a 7% decrease in vehicle miles driven and a 12.5% ​​decrease in traffic crashes in New York City during this period,” the New York State Comptroller’s Office said in a press release.
