Synagogue in Toronto, Canada attacked in anti-Semitic crime incident

A synagogue in Toronto was pelted with stones, breaking the glass panes above the doors, Canadian politicians and Jewish groups said on Sunday.

B’nai Brith Canada said police are investigating the stone-throwing at the Pride of Israel synagogue as a possible hate crime.

Ontario Attorney General Michael Kerzner visited the site and released a video condemning the vandalism and the damage caused.

“Attacks on places of worship are completely unacceptable. We are proud of our diversity and tolerance,” Kerzner wrote on social media. “Hate has no place in our Ontario!”

Michael Levitt, president and CEO of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, said on X that Canada Day weekend was “not a happy” weekend for Canada’s Jews because of the incident.

Similar attacks on Jewish institutions in Canada

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on Jewish institutions in Canada, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area.

On June 1, a man was arrested for breaking the window of a Toronto synagogue with a rock. He was arrested again two days later. On May 25, a shooting occurred at a Toronto school.

On May 17 and April 19, the windows of the Kehillat Shaarei Torah synagogue in Toronto were smashed, and on April 26 and 28, the signs of another synagogue in the same area were set on fire.

Elsewhere in the province, the window of a London synagogue was smashed on June 13. A stone was found near the broken glass.

“It is out of control and must stop,” Judy Foldes, chief operating officer of B’nai Brith Canada, said in a statement Sunday. “We call on police to closely and vigilantly monitor Jewish institutions during this difficult time for Jewish Canadians.”
