Oregon high school football coach Jamal Jones resigns

The resignation of Westview High School coach Jamal Jones on Friday brought an end to a bizarre incident at a football camp in Oregon.

Jones is said to have woken up players by slapping and shaking them in the early hours of the multi-day football camp on the campus of Linfield University (McMinnville).

Jones’ decision was announced in an email to parents, Oregonlive.com reported:

“We are ready to move forward as Jamal Jones has resigned from our position as head coach, effective immediately,” said the email from WHS Principal Matt Pedersen. “A meeting with our assistant coaching staff will be held this morning and more information regarding team meetings, football training and practices will be released shortly. Our goal is to ensure that our players and their families feel safe returning to the Westview football program and that our student-athletes can look forward to a successful season.”

As reported last week, this was Jones’ first year as head coach of the Wildcats. He previously served as head coach at Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon, and Arcata High School in California.

He is also on leave from his job as a police officer in Hillsboro.
