Arrest made after car crash in Montco that killed pregnant woman and baby – NBC10 Philadelphia

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a car crash in Montgomery County in May that killed a pregnant woman and her child, prosecutors said.

Jabrial Terry, 27, of Philadelphia was arrested on two counts of DUI manslaughter, accidents causing death/injury while unlicensed, possession with intent to resell and other charges in connection with the May 4 car crash that killed 24-year-old Nya Janae Stokes of Philadelphia and her baby.

According to officials, the two-vehicle crash that killed Stokes and her baby occurred around 6 p.m. in Whitemarsh Township.

Officers found a gold 2000 Buick LeSabre and a gray 2009 Toyota Corolla, both with severe front-end damage, officials said.

The driver of the Toyota, Anne Nyaga of West Norriton, suffered internal injuries and injuries to her legs, officials said.

Officials said the driver of the Buick, Terry, was helped out of the car by bystanders and suffered visible injuries to his face and legs. The Buick’s passenger, Stokes, who was nine months pregnant at the time, was found unconscious.

Both Terry and Stokes were not wearing seat belts during the crash, officials said.

A passerby performed CPR on Stokes until officials said medical personnel arrived and she was taken to the hospital where an emergency cesarean section was performed.

The baby survived birth but died five days later from injuries sustained in the crash, officials said. Stokes was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m. the day of the accident.

According to officials, police found a clear sandwich bag and a medicine bottle containing marijuana in the Buick at the scene, as well as a significant amount of cash on the floor of the driver’s cab.

Hospital medical staff found Terry had numerous pills hidden in his groin area, including 39 oxycodone, 45 Xanax and eight buprenorphine/naxolone pills, officials said. Blood tests revealed he had fentanyl, oxycodone, benzodiazepines and cannabinoids in his system at the time of the accident.

Through video footage and witness statements, officials said, investigators determined that the Buick driven by Terry was traveling eastbound on Skippack Pike at 50 mph in a 45 mph zone when it veered off the right side of the road into a concrete drainage ditch, then oversteered and abruptly drifted into the westbound lane, striking the Toyota.

According to investigators, there were no mechanical problems that could have contributed to the accident.

The investigation also revealed that both the Buick’s VIN and license plate had been altered, the vehicle was not insured or registered, and the Buick’s inspection sticker had expired, officials added.

According to authorities, Terry fled after the crash and was only found by U.S. Marshals on Tuesday and taken into custody without incident.

He was arraigned and his bail was set at $99,000, officials said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July.
