Tamayo Perry's death gives Lulu Gribbin's family a new perspective

Nearly two weeks after leaving a Pensacola hospital, Alabama teenager Lulu Gribbin underwent her sixth surgery following a near-fatal shark attack in Walton County.

Gribbin, the 15-year-old who was on a mother-daughter beach vacation in Rosemary Beach, was one of three people attacked by a shark on June 7. She was subsequently flown by helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital, where she underwent life-saving amputation surgery.

Her mother Ann wrote on CaringBridge on Monday that surgeons had to operate on Lulu Gribbin again after bacteria were discovered in her leg. It was the sixth operation since the shark attack.

“The doctor came out and told us there was bacteria in the leg,” wrote Ann Gribbin. “He said it was purple.”

The mother wrote that she was so thankful her daughter was still alive as she watched the news of more shark attacks. One of the shark attacks she had seen on the news involved surfer and actor Tamayo Perry, who was killed while surfing near the shores of the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Sunday.

“In the waiting room during surgery, I saw the news and there was a story about shark attacks,” she wrote. “One was a 14-year-old boy who was attacked in North Carolina (Sunday) and another man in Hawaii.”

“We could be sitting on the other side and Lulu wouldn’t be here. She shouldn’t be here, but she is,” added Ann Gribbin. “I would rather feel all of these emotions than the unthinkable.”

Tamayo Perry killed by shark in Hawaii

Perry, 49, a well-known big-wave surfer and lifeguard on Oahu, died while surfing on the island on Sunday.

Shayne Enright, spokesman for the Honolulu Emergency Management Agency, said Parry was the person declared dead by medical personnel after being rescued from the water.

“We can confirm it was one of our own… North Shore lifeguard Tamayo Perry,” said Assistant Chief of Emergency Services Kurt Lager. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious. And as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more.”

Outside of the Hawaiian island, Perry gained greater popularity after appearing in “Blue Crush” in 2002, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in 2011, and the television series “Hawaii Five-0.”

Florida has the most shark attacks

According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been 1,632 unprovoked shark bites in the United States since 1837. Most of the attacks, 928, have occurred in Florida. This is largely due to the state’s 1,350-mile coastline, the longest in the United States. The state has abundant coastal prey for sharks and attracts tourists year-round who enjoy Florida’s beaches.

There is no beach in Florida where you can’t spot a shark. This is where the “shark bite capital of the world” Volusia County lies.

Volusia County – home of popular Daytona Beach – recorded the highest number, with 351 unprovoked shark attacks. The oldest documented attack dates back to 1837. Volusia’s southern neighbors, Brevard and Palm Beach counties, recorded the second highest number, with 158 and 83 attacks, respectively.
