Triathlete injured in hit-and-run; Clarkesville resident arrested

A Clarkesville driver and her passenger were arrested and charged with hit-and-run after police say they struck a bicyclist on Highway 17 in White County. The June 22 crash left 23-year-old Evan Windham of Sautee seriously injured.

Windham, who was training for a triathlon, was riding his bike when Angela Stoval-Post allegedly hit him with her vehicle and left the scene of the accident, authorities said.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 17 and Muscadine Drive, about six miles southeast of Helen. Officers responded to an accident report in the area and found the injured cyclist. According to Captain Clay Hammond of the White County Sheriff’s Office, they found Stoval-Post and her passenger away from the scene of the accident.

Hammond says Stoval-Post’s vehicle was damaged by the collision with Windham and his bicycle.

Stoval-Post, 65, and George Randolph Holcomb, 73, were both charged with hit-and-run. Authorities also charged them with driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle, failure to report an accident and failure to maintain lane.

Grateful to be alive

In February, Now Habersham featured Evan Windham in our Livin’ the Dream series. A former professional soccer player, he founded Windham Training to inspire and encourage those in Northeast Georgia who wanted to improve their soccer careers or their physical health. Since starting his venture, he has become something of a hero to many young athletes.

Daniel Windham, his father, says Evan will have a long road to recovery, but he is alive and they are grateful.

“A couple from South Carolina saw the accident, chased the car that hit Evan and flagged them down until the police arrived. I would like to know who the couple is so I can thank them,” he says.

Evan has built his career on helping others become their best selves.

As a role model for many youth in the White and Habersham County area, it is important to Evan that people are aware of the dangers of drinking and driving.

“I’m alive and it will take some time to get back to normal, but I have people around me who love me and can help me,” he tells Now Habersham.

Evan says his brother will take over training until Evan can return.

“I’m really grateful for the prayers and thoughts,” says Evan.

Holcomb and Stoval-Post were arrested and released from the White County Jail on $2,500 bail.
