Memorial service held for off-duty firefighters killed in ATV accident – WSOC TV

ROWAN COUNTY, NC – A community gathered Tuesday to honor two firefighters who died last week in an off-road vehicle accident.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office in West Virginia confirmed that the accident occurred Friday near Northfork, nearly three hours from where Daniel Sell and Jacob Steele were volunteering with the Rowan Iredell Fire Department.

Channel 9’s Dave Faherty was along the procession route between Statesville and Salisbury and spoke to people who knew the men, including Gavin Starnes, who worked with Steele.

“He was the kind of guy who would put a smile on your face all day long,” Starnes said. “If we had a hot day and it was a long one, he was the one up there sweating and working.”

Outside the Cleveland Community Fire Department building, Channel 9 saw firefighters placing Sells’s uniform under the flag raised in honor of the two men.

“We are a brotherhood and this is your extended family. It hurts,” said Captain Ryan Haglan of Cleveland Community Fire. “They will be greatly missed and we appreciate what they have done for the community.”

“It’s the least I can do other than pray for the family,” Betty Sloan said.
