Hawaiian lifeguard dies in shark attack off Oahu

A lifeguard and surfing instructor who also appeared in films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush” died Sunday after a suspected shark attack on the north shore of Ohau, Hawaii, officials said. City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguard Tamayo Perry, 49, died in the attack near Goat Island, Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department said in a statement. Honolulu Ocean Safety and the city’s fire, police and emergency services responded to the call at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s north shore just before 1 p.m. after a caller reported seeing a man who appeared to have been bitten by a shark, Enright said. Lifeguards brought Perry to shore on a jet ski and paramedics assisted in determining death, Enright said. Perry, who had worked as a lifeguard on the North Shore, began his career with the Ocean Safety department in July 2016, Enright said. According to his IMBD page, Perry has made several television and film appearances. Perry’s bio on the Oahu Surfing Experience website lists his credits in the films “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Charlie’s Angels 2,” “Blue Crush” and the hit television series “Lost” and “Hawaii Five-0.” After the attack, water protection personnel issued shark warnings in the area, Enright said. Kurt Lager, acting chief of the Honolulu Water Protection Department, said Perry was “a lifeguard that everyone loved.” “He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a world-renowned professional surfer,” Lager said at a news conference. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more.” “Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected waterman,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, calling Perry’s death “a tragic loss.”
