Suraj Revanna sexual abuse case: JD(S) MLC remanded in custody for 14 days | Everything we know so far

Suraj Revanna, JD(S) MLC, was arrested on charges of sexually abusing a male party worker and remanded in custody for 14 days by a magistrate on Sunday.

Earlier today, the investigation was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Subsequently, Suraj was brought to Bengaluru by Hassan and produced before the judge of the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (ACMM) at his residence.

Here’s what we know about the case so far:

  • Suraj was arrested on Saturday at Holenarasipura police station in Hassan district for allegedly sexually assaulting a party worker a few days ago.
  • He was charged under various sections of the International Criminal Code, including for “unnatural crimes”.
  • Suraj was questioned overnight at the CEN police station in Hassan before being arrested this morning, a PTI report said, citing sources. He was later taken to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) for a medical examination.
  • A 27-year-old man had filed a complaint with the police that Suraj Revanna, the eldest son of Holenarasipura MP HD Revanna, sexually assaulted him on June 16 at his farm in Ghannikada.
  • Based on the complaint, the Holenarasipura police registered a case against the JD(S) MLC under sections 377 (unnatural offences), 342 (wrongful deprivation of liberty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) late on Saturday night.
  • However, Suraj Revanna (37), the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and nephew of Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy, has categorically denied these allegations.
  • Suraj had also claimed that the man had filed a “false complaint” to blackmail 5 Crore from him.
  • On Friday, police registered an extortion case against the JD(S) worker based on a complaint filed by Suraj Revanna’s close aide Shivakumar.
  • Shivakumar had alleged that the party worker tried to extort money from Suraj Revanna by threatening to file a false sexual abuse case against him.
  • It is alleged that the man demanded 5 crore from Suraj Revanna, later it was reduced to 2 Crores.
