The Animal Rescue League of Berks County has issued a Code Red for the city of Reading.

The Code Red issued earlier this week by the Animal Rescue League of Berks County for the town of Reading has been revised and expanded to reflect the forecast of a prolonged heat wave.

Today the curfew is from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Fridays it is from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Due to the forecasted temperatures, dog owners and caregivers in Reading must keep their dogs indoors except for supervised bathroom breaks and exercise. This measure was added to the city ordinance in 2015.

Failure to comply may result in an animal control officer removing the animal from the property and impounding it at the ARL in Cumru Township.

Once Code Red is lifted, owners will have 48 hours to pick up their dogs. They will then have to pay the applicable boarding fees.

Anyone who witnesses an unattended dog left outside in Reading during these hours should call the ARL at 610-373-8830.
