Sexually abused men need psychiatric care | Letters to the editor

June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.

Sexual assault can significantly impact men’s mental health as it can lead to a variety of psychological and emotional problems.

The experience of sexual assault often results in trauma, which can manifest itself in numerous mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal thoughts.

Men who experience sexual assault can suffer severe mental health problems. Research shows that male victims can suffer from feelings of shame and guilt, as well as confusion about their masculinity and sexuality, which exacerbates mental health problems.

In Trinidad, cultural norms and societal expectations regarding masculinity can make it particularly difficult for men to report sexual assault and seek help. This reluctance to disclose such experiences, for fear of stigma or not being believed, can lead to isolation and untreated mental health problems. Reports from local psychologists and organizations working with victims suggest that there is an urgent need for increased awareness and support services specifically tailored to men. The Trinidad and Tobago Coalition Against Domestic Violence, for example, has documented cases in which male victims report high levels of psychological distress and suicidal thoughts.

Local NGOs and mental health services in Trinidad have collected case studies and testimonials from male victims of sexual violence. These personal accounts often reveal severe psychological impacts, including chronic depression, anxiety and PTSD.

Trinidadian researchers have looked into the issue of sexual assault against men and the mental health consequences associated with it. For example, studies from the University of the West Indies have found that gender-sensitive approaches to mental health care are needed to address the unique challenges faced by male victims. Organizations such as the Rape Crisis Society of Trinidad and Tobago provide data and reports highlighting the prevalence of mental health problems among male victims of sexual assault. These reports often highlight the barriers to seeking help and the resulting mental health impacts.

Sexual assault can have a significant impact on men’s mental health, including in Trinidad. The psychological impact, compounded by societal stigma and a lack of tailored support services, highlights the urgent need for comprehensive mental health services and public awareness to effectively address this problem.
