Gordon Ramsay ‘lucky to be alive’ after brutal bicycle accident

It’s so easy to forget how important proper safety is when riding a bike or motorcycle. We are terribly vulnerable; we are always at risk of catastrophic injury or death if we don’t take the right measures. Gordon Ramsay knows first-hand what it feels like to not protect yourself.

On the occasion of Father’s Day, he calls on all fathers on Instagram to look after their children. Gordon remembers a particularly bad accident with his bicycle. After the aftermath, he feels “lucky to be alive”.

It could have been a lot worse if he hadn’t been wearing his helmet. “It really shook me,” Gordon Ramsay tells viewers. “Honestly, I’m glad to be here. The incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses and hospital that have looked after me this week have been amazing. But honestly, you have to wear a helmet. I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care that these helmets cost money. But they are essential. Even with the kids, on a short journey, you have to wear a helmet.”

Gordon Ramsey stresses the importance of wearing a helmet

If his words weren’t enough for you, Gordon reveals just how badly he was injured in the accident. He lifts up his chef’s jacket and shirt to reveal a gruesome, dark purple torso. He is also visibly shaken throughout the video, Gordon’s fingers twitching as he gracefully phrases his words. You can tell how scared he was by the events, especially as someone who admits to enjoying cycling. Thankfully, he didn’t break any bones or suffer anything too bad other than the nasty bruises. In his caption, he writes: “I’m a bit bruised and look like a purple potato.”

Gordon captions the rest of the post by thanking the people who cared for him when he was so badly injured. “I am grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawerence + Memorial Hospital in New London who cared for me and checked me over, but I am most grateful for my helmet, which saved my life,” he says.

In addition, Gordon Ramsay ends his video with wishes for a safe and happy Father’s Day.
