AARP Fraud Alert: Moving Scam

Summer seems to be the season for moving. Whether you’re moving for work, downsizing, or sending your child to college, who you hire to move you is very important. Cutting corners on your move could lead you right into the hands of scammers.

Moving scams are perpetrated by rogue operators who operate primarily online. They solicit business by offering low estimates, often without even looking at the item being moved. They may ask for a large deposit or even full payment up front.

Even though you have your deposit in hand, the “movers” may simply not show up at the agreed time and place. Or they may try to change the deal at the last minute by increasing the price. Worst of all, some companies will pick up your things but then charge more money for delivery.

To avoid these scams, be sure to get multiple quotes and check the references of the companies you hire. While we all want to save money, when it comes to safely transporting your personal belongings, cheaper is not always better.

Fight fraud! If you can spot a fraud, you can stop it.
