Man arrested for murder of Laken Riley, accused of ‘peeking’ UGA employee same day – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATHENS, Ga. — The man accused of killing a nursing student while jogging at the University of Georgia earlier this year has now been indicted on new charges stemming from a separate incident that same day.

Laken Riley, 22, was found beaten to death on February 22nd. A Venezuelan immigrant, Jose Ibarra, was arrested and charged with murder.

According to new documents filed Tuesday, Ibarra is now also charged with espionage against a University of Georgia employee. Documents show that on the same day he is accused of murdering Riley, he went to an apartment in the University Village Housing Building “S” and peered through the woman’s window.

The documents also accuse Ibarra of suffocating Riley and causing blunt force trauma to her head.

Ibarra was initially charged with seven counts: premeditated murder, aggravated murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, obstructing an emergency call and concealing the death of another.

The new indictment adds three counts, including aggravated assault with attempted rape, tampering with evidence and espionage.

The evidence tampering charge accuses him of hiding a jacket and gloves to avoid getting caught.
