Shelburne police are warning residents of an increase in “smash and grab” robberies

SHELBURNE, Mass. (WWLP) – Shelburne Police are warning residents about the recent increase in “smash and grab” car break-ins.

According to the Shelburne Police Department, several vehicle-related thefts, particularly “smash and grab” incidents, have occurred in the city and surrounding communities.

A certain group of people target parked vehicles, especially in areas frequented by tourists and visitors. They smashed vehicle windows and grabbed the valuables inside before running away.

These incidents are currently under investigation.

The police have given some tips on how you can protect yourself and your property:

  • Stay alert: Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious behavior to authorities. If you see someone loitering near parked vehicles or observing them in an unusual manner, contact the police.
  • Secure your property: Do not leave valuables such as wallets, purses, electronics, or other items visible in your vehicle. If you must leave items in the car, place them in the trunk or in a locked glove compartment.
  • Park smartly: Park in well-lit, highly visible areas. Consider parking near building entrances or near security cameras. Avoid remote or poorly lit areas where thieves might try to break in.
  • Report incidents: If you are the victim of a robbery, report it to the police, even if the items stolen are of little value. Your report could help authorities identify patterns and catch the perpetrators.
  • Community collaboration: It is recommended that the community pay attention to each other. If you see a neighbor’s vehicle being broken into, contact the police.
