South Carolina launches state investigation into water sports rentals on an island

Sea Monkeys Watersports in the Hilton Head Harbor Marina is under investigation by the SCDNR for allegedly failing to report an accident involving one of their rental boats.

Sea Monkeys Watersports in the Hilton Head Harbor Marina is under investigation by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for allegedly failing to report an accident involving one of their rentals. In a video sent to WJCL 22 by an anonymous viewer, witnesses say the rental company’s owner, Neil Turner, along with six others, carted a young man with injuries from a water skiing accident to a red truck. The same witnesses say they did not see police or ambulances arrive at the scene. Greg Lucas with the SCDNR says the incident occurred on May 29. Agency officials were notified of the incident on June 4, six days after the incident. According to the SCDNR, rental agencies are required by South Carolina law to report accidents: Without injuries within seven days. With injuries within 24 hours. With injuries involving immediate serious bodily harm. In a statement to WJCL 22, Lucas says, among other things, “We have charged the company that rented the jet ski with failure to report an accident that resulted in injuries. If convicted, the fine could be between $100 and $500 and a one-year suspension of the boating license.” WJCL 22 News’ AJ Sisson attempted to reach Sea Monkeys Watersports owner and Lowcounty Ferry LLC. owner Turner for comment on the allegations against the company, but has not heard back. Sea Monkeys Watersports at Hilton Head Harbor Marina is under investigation by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for allegedly failing to report an accident involving one of its rental vehicles.

In a video sent to WJCL 22 by an anonymous viewer, witnesses report that rental company owner Neil Turner, along with six others, were dragging a young man with injuries from a water skiing accident to a red truck. The same witnesses say they did not see any police or ambulance at the scene of the accident.

Greg Lucas of the SCDNR says the incident occurred on May 29. Agency officials were notified of the incident on June 4, six days after the incident.

According to SCDNR, car rental companies are required under South Carolina law to report accidents:

  • Without injuries within seven days.
  • In case of injuries within 24 hours.
  • These are injuries that cause immediate serious bodily harm.

In a statement to WJCL 22, Lucas said, among other things:

“We have charged the company that rented the jet ski with failing to report an accident that resulted in injuries. If convicted, the person could face a fine of $100 to $500 and a one-year suspension of their boating license.”

AJ Sisson of WJCL 22 News has attempted to reach the owner of Sea Monkeys Watersports and the owner of Lowcounty Ferry LLC., Turner, for comment on the allegations made against the company, but has not received a response.

According to SCDNR, the investigation is still ongoing.
