Police identify Des Moines man killed by pickup truck

Des Moines police have identified a man who died as a result of injuries he sustained when he was struck by a pickup truck while walking on Sunday. The fatal crash occurred in the 5400 block of SE 5th Street. Des Moines police said they arrived at the scene just before noon. The pedestrian, now identified as Jose Manuel Clark, 51, of Des Moines, was dead upon arrival. Police have already filed charges against Andi Gael Cardenas, 23, of Des Moines, for his role in the crash. Cardenas is charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident, as well as other traffic offenses. Police say Cardenas was involved in a hit-and-run crash that caused property damage prior to the fatal crash. He struck another vehicle after missing a red light at SE 5th Street and Porter Avenue. He then continued north and lost control of his vehicle, according to police. Investigators said he collided with several objects, including two trees. Police say he then struck the 51-year-old man walking south on the sidewalk. SE 5th Street neighbor Raschelle Bills said she went outside at the intersection after the initial impact and looked out to see Clark being struck. She ran to help Clark because she works as a medical assistant, but when she tried to feel his pulse, she couldn’t feel one. She later realized the man she was trying to help was a familiar face. Bills said she never spoke to Clark but remembers seeing him regularly, almost daily, walking on the stretch of sidewalk where he was struck. Today, the downed trees and destroyed grass where the pickup truck jumped the curb are a dark memory for Bills and a reminder of the dangers on the road. “There have been three accidents since we’ve lived here, and we haven’t been here a year,” Bills said. “It took a lot of effort not to want to give up everything and move. We’re happy here, but at the same time it scares me because we have dogs, and we also have kids and grandkids, so it’s a little unsettling.”» Download the free KCCI app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google PlayGet the latest headlines from KCCI
