Winter Haven tests a new lightning warning system on Thursday

Winter Haven residents may hear sirens sounding several times at the city’s recreational facilities on Thursday, but there is no need to be alarmed.

The city of Winter Haven, in partnership with the Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency, has installed a new siren warning system, the DTN On Guard Siren Alerting Solution, at two locations: the AdventHealth Fieldhouse and Conference Center, where the Rowdy Gaines swimming pool is located, and the Florida Citrus Building, where Nora Mayo Hall is located, according to a news release.

City spokeswoman Katrina Hill said city staff plan to manually trigger the systems on Thursday between noon and 1 p.m., sounding several times. The flash warning system consists of a siren and beacons mounted on the building alongside the loudspeaker.
