The man killed in the Opa-locka shooting was a popular school football coach

OPA LOCKA, Florida. – Miami Norland Senior High School is mourning the loss of one of its football coaches, Keon Smith, who was killed in a shooting in Opa-locka early Monday morning.

“On behalf of Principal Gaines-Miller, Coach Heidelburg, the Miami Norland Senior High School family and the entire football team, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Coach Keon Smith’s family,” the school posted on its Instagram page. “It was truly an honor to work with him as a coach, mentor and leader. You will be truly missed in the Viking Nation.”

A school district spokesperson confirmed to Local 10 that Smith has been the quarterback coach at Miami Norland for the past few years.

He said a crisis team for staff and students was at the school on Monday.

According to Opa-locka police, the shooting was reported around 12:50 a.m. Monday from the Mary Alice Brown apartment complex in the 2800 block of Northwest 132nd Street.

Police said officers arrived at the scene and found a man shot.

He was later identified as Smith.

According to police, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami-Dade Fire Department.

The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation into the murder.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown and police have not released any information about the shooter.
