Barstow Police Officer Injured, Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder

Authorities say a Barstow Police Department officer was injured during an arrest on Sunday.

Around 4:40 a.m., police received a 911 call about a man breaking into a home in the 1500 block of West Main Street. The emergency caller told police that a man was on their property and was causing a disturbance, police said.

Officers responded and found 24-year-old Joel Hernandez in the area, police said. While police attempted to speak with Hernandez, he walked away from officers with his hand in his pocket. He then fled on foot to the 200 block of North Avenue H, police said.

Officers caught up with Hernandez. When they tried to arrest him, the suspect pulled a pair of scissors out of his pocket, according to authorities.

Hernandez attempted to stab officers while continuing to swing the scissors at them. According to authorities, officers eventually used a Taser to make the arrest.

One officer was injured in the elbow during the arrest. No other officers or citizens were injured in the incident, police said.

Police later discovered that Hernandez had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on suspicion of armed robbery.
