Fans react to Atlanta Hawks taking No. 1 overall in 2024 NBA Draft

On Mother’s Day, the Atlanta Hawks landed the top pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, even though they had just a 3% chance of winning the lottery.

This is the first time in franchise history that the Hawks will have the first overall pick. Here’s a look at the fan reaction when Atlanta won the first selection.

It’s no surprise that fans immediately called for Atlanta to hit the reset button and move Trae Young. The backcourt tandem of Young and Dejounte Murray did not perform as hoped, and there were already many rumors circulating that the Hawks would move one or both players.

Now the Hawks can get a fresh start with a top prospect like Alexandre Sarr or Donovan Clingan around whom they can lean moving forward. Young is likely at the top of the San Antonio Spurs’ wish list as they look for a guard to pair with generational talent Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs have the fourth and eighth picks in the first round, giving them plenty of leverage to acquire the 25-year-old star.

Others took the more positive route, envisioning a future duo of Young and their No. 1 pick. With the draft less than two months away, Hawks general manager Landry Fields has a lot of work to do.
