Choctaw Nation Honors Lighthorse Police Department During National Police Week, May 12-18 | News

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) will observe National Police Week May 12-18 and thank Choctaw Lighthorse officers who play an important role in keeping communities safe.

President John F. Kennedy established National Police Week in 1962 and designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. CNO recognizes the importance of honoring the men and women who selflessly serve our communities.

“The Lighthorse Police Department, a dedicated group of service-oriented individuals, recognizes the risks inherent in their job and their critical role in maintaining public safety,” said Michael Hall, executive director of public safety. Hall emphasized the importance of her role, stating, “We do not take our duty lightly.”

On May 15, flags will be at half-staff to honor those lost in the line of duty.

In honor of the CNO Lighthorse Police and all public safety organizations that keep the reservation safe, the following events will be held throughout the week:

CNO Lighthorse Special Events

The CNO Lighthorse Department will house public safety officers at two locations on the reservation.

They will be held on May 13th at 11:30 a.m. at the Choctaw Nation Public Safety Building at 3653 Big Lots Pkwy, Durant OK, and on May 14th at 11:30 a.m. at the Choctaw Nation Community Center at 208 B Street, Poteau, OK

CNO Lighthorse Awards Ceremony

The CNO will honor several Lighthorse officers for their actions above and beyond the call of duty.

The awards ceremony will be held on May 16th from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Choctaw Nation Public Safety Building, 3653 Big Lots Pkwy, Durant OK

The City of Durant Ceremony

The Durant Police Department is hosting the 12th annual memorial service to honor Bryan County police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The service will be held on May 16 at 5:45 p.m. in the amphitheater behind the Choctaw Nation Headquarters, 1802 Chukka Hina Drive Durant, OK and is open to the public.
